5 + things about Luleå

Okaj, I am back! I want to share 5 + things about the city.

To start with, Luleå is called the ten-minute city, where the magic of nature meets modern living. It’s home to the world’s first indoor shopping mall. The city is home to the world’s first indoor shopping mall. During winter, it is possible to walk, skate, and even drive on the frozen sea. The locals? They are absolutely crazy about ice hockey.

There’s no ‘a’ in the city name. It’s ‘å’.

Luleå offers extraordinary seasonal contrasts to residents and travel enthusiastics – from snow, cold temperatures and a frozen sea in winter to bright sunny day, strong sunshine and midnight sunlight in summer. The contrasting weather and nature open up many fun activities. You can walk, go ice skating, skiing and cycling on the frozen sea in the winter. You can even drive a car on the ice road. In the summer you can take a walk at 1 a.m. and you will not need to rely on the streetlights.

Nothing is far away here in this city! Urban life, forest, lakes, airport, the university - everything is within reach. The city offers a wide range of restaurants, hotels cultural events and leisure activities in a close parameter. The coffee shop you want to go after work is probably just five minutes away. Your home is also ten minutes away if not less. Both from your work and from the coffee shop.

It was Luleå where the first indoor shopping mall was build. It was designed by architect Ralph Erskine. The shopping mall was opened in October 1955.

Luleå is growing in the right way. The city in fact is on the front line in the green transition. Luleå Industripark in collaboration with Luleå University of Technology is creating a kind of silicon valley for green technology and fossil-free industry. Facebook which chose Luleå to built its first data centre outside the United States, is also contributing to the growth. It chose Luleå because of the natural cooling advantage, clean energy, and a very reliable electrical networks.

At the moment there are about 80,000 inhabitants in the city. It is expected that with the growing business and job opportunities there will be at least 100,000 inhabitants by the end of 2040.

The city is crazy about ice hockey. That's the number one sports in Luleå. If you want to initiate a discussion with a resident, mention Luleå Hockey. The team competes in the top tier. It won Swedish Hockey League in 1995-96 season and the Champion Hockey League’s inaugural season in 2014-15. Not to be outdone, BC Luleå, the city’s basketball team, has won the Swedish championship an impressive 8 times.  On match days, the atmosphere at the arenas become electrifying.

I created a video on the same topic and published on my YouTube channel.

That’s my own backside and ‘soon-to-be-bald head’ you’ll spot in the video, but the voice is not mine. I used a machine-generated voice for this one — better pronunciation, better energy, better tone. The video clips span from 2020 to 2025.

I actually talked about more than five things about the city. I am not completely wrong since I said I will mention 5+ things.
