Where to go - ICA, COOP or Willy’s?

It is kind of difficult to minimize the living expense at the beginning. Hence From day one, we tried to go methodically so that we don’t overspend.

For grocery and daily needs, Luleå has three departmental chain stores in offering – ICA, COOP and Willy’s. There is not much difference in the three; they offer quite similar shopping experience. ICA probably is the big brother, they have many outlets across the city.  Number wise, next is COOP. And there are only a few Willy’s in Luleå.

We realize that the cost of living largely depends on living area, individual lifestyle and eating habits. And it changes over time. We are running on savings so being quite picky. From the last two months’ experience, I feel Willy’s has more options for Asian people. The price is also a bit reasonable compared to ICA and COOP. The closest ICA from our house is within walking distance and we have to take the bus to go to the closest Willy’s. Even than we do majority of our shopping from Willy’s.

I think Willy’s have an edge on their supply chain and suppliers which allows them to offer in a reduced price. I noticed there are some brands that are only available in Willy’s.

Apart from ICA, COOP and Willy’s, there is this shop run by an Iraqi family – Norrbotten Oriental. They have fishes, lamps, beefs, spices – Bangla style. Pricing is reasonable.

On average, the prices of milk, egg, bread, and cooking oil are as follows in Luleå:

Milk 1.5 liter –    13 SEK
Egg 30 pieces –  45 SEK
Bread     900g -  20 SEK
Rice  1 kg       -  14 SEK
Spaghetti 1 kg    14 SEK
Cooking oil 1 lt - 16 SEK

Onion 1 kg -       11 SEK
Juice 1 liter -      15 SEK

1 SEK = 9 Taka plus minus

Two months is no time to understand the system and procedure. But so far, I observed on Thursdays, they reduce the prices of perishable items. Meaning it is better to do the weekly grocery on Thursdays. And there are offers at all three stores almost every week, but it’s hard to keep track. We found a mobile app called Tiendeo where we identify the offers before heading for grocery.
