Luleå Gammelstaden - a must visit

We visited the old town - Luleå Gammelstaden. Quite far away from the city center.

The whole place is very cosy and picturesque. There are cottages, restaurants and coffee shops surrounding the church. Local farmers built the church cottages and shops in a time when attendance at church services was mandatory. There were social gatherings during the church weekends, locals and visitors bonded and friendships were made, maintained and broken.

Luleå Gammelstad is a UNESCO world cultural heritage now. This large, beautiful Nederluleå Church and the near-by marketplace were built during the fifteenth century. It reflects the economic prosperity of the area of that time. Trading of fur and salmon made a number of notable businessmen at that time. While some of the houses still appear to be used as regular houses, others are kept as part of the heritage place to cherish the memories of days gone by.

We walked around the town, farms, sat at a coffee shop, took fragrance of the flowers. It was wonderful. We will probably go again.

Three lines of LLT ( bus service ) go to the Luleå Gammelstad. Line 1, line 2 and line 9. Line 9 drops right near the church.
