Street foods in Luleå

Street food is something that is quite rare in Luleå.

I come from a place where the whole city is a host to street foods. Luleå is just the opposite.

While I was walking along the South Harbor (they call it Södra Hamnleden in Swedish) today, found a van selling fast foods. Name of the establishment is ‘Sweden Street Food’. Nothing  similar to what I am accustomed to in Dhaka though where the whole streets are usually full of many food carts; this is just one van selling some items.

The person selling the fast food is Kerry. He is originally from Finland. His family came to Luleå in 1965 and since then they are living here. After knowing that I am from Bangladesh, he said - a lot of Bangladeshis own restaurants in Europe but they call it ‘Indian restaurants’ because Indian foods are very popular all over Europe.

He has some Bangladeshi friends who own restaurants. Not in Luleå though.

Kerry comes to the South Harbor on weekends and stays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. COVID-19 is bad for business he mentioned. After hearing that I am studying masters at Luleå Tekniska Universitet, he said, he would approach the university authority soon for permission so that during weekdays he can be at the campus and sell foods to students.

South Harbor is located along the southern shore. It is just 1.5 km away from the city centre. People of all ages come here for morning / afternoon / evening walks. At this time of the year, they also get to walk on the sea since it is still frozen.
